The hole is a powerful metaphor in the history of art. It is associated with absence, emptiness, trauma, and transformation. In the Caribbean, a hole in the earth can evoke the scars of colonialism, diaspora, cultural resistance, or the erasure of certain narratives. It is an abyss in the symbolic map of power: a fissure, both alluring and terrifying.
From an anthropological and sociological perspective, it represents the non-place of those who have been historically ignored and displaced, pushed by hurricanes, earthquakes, prejudice, and hostile governments into a life of oppression and inequality. To inhabit the hole is to bear indelible marks—a hollow—on the body, memory, and identity.
At times, the hole becomes a refuge; a territory of the clandestine, the repressed, of that which survives in the shadows of the dominant system. Within it, a resilient sensitivity takes root, free in its imagination, finding new ways to exist—far from the blinding light of Caribbean “paradises.”
In the work of Jotham Malavé, this space of crisis and tension, of physical and mental unease, manifests through fragmented scenes where eroded and watchful figures drift between lust and agony, humanity and animality. His painting evokes a sense of alienation and disorientation, as if his characters inhabit a threshold between the tangible and the vanishing.
Malavé frees color from its descriptive function, employing intense tones reminiscent of horror cinema and concert lighting—it is a staged spectacle. These contrasts clash with the absolute darkness, the starkness, and the raw abandonment of the hole, offering a rarely explored emotional reading of the Puerto Rican landscape.
El hueco es una metáfora poderosa en la historia del arte. Se asocia con la ausencia, el vacío, el trauma y la transformación. En el Caribe, un hueco en la tierra puede evocar las cicatrices del colonialismo, la diáspora, la resistencia cultural o la invisibilización de ciertas narrativas. Es un abismo en el mapa simbólico del poder: una fisura, a la vez atractiva y aterradora.
Visto desde la antropología y la sociología, es el no-lugar de quienes han sido históricamente ignorados y desplazados, empujados por huracanes, terremotos, prejuicios y gobiernos hostiles a una existencia de opresión y desigualdad. Habitar el hueco deja marcas imborrables -un hoyo- en el cuerpo, la memoria y la identidad.
El hueco a veces deviene refugio; territorio de lo clandestino, lo reprimido, lo que sobrevive en las sombras del sistema dominante. En su interior germina una sensibilidad resiliente, libre en su imaginación, que encuentra nuevas formas de existir, lejos de la luz enceguecedora de los “paraísos” caribeños.
En la obra de Jotham Malavé, este espacio de crisis y tensión, de desasosiego físico y mental, se manifiesta a través de escenas fragmentadas donde figuras erosionadas y vigilantes transitan entre la lujuria y la agonía, la humanidad y la animalidad. Su pintura genera una sensación de alienación y desorientación, como si los personajes habitaran un umbral entre lo tangible y lo que se desvanece.
Malavé libera el color de su función descriptiva, y utiliza tonos intensos que evocan el cine de terror y las luces de concierto; es una puesta en escena. Contrastan con la oscuridad absoluta, el despojo y la crudeza del abandono en el hueco, ofreciendo así una lectura emocional poco explorada del paisaje puertorriqueño.
